Western Health News

August 24, 2017 – Buzz of construction as hospital takes shape. If you’ve been to Sunshine Hospital lately you will no doubt have noticed an energetic buzz coming from the construction site of the Joan Kirner Women’s and Children’s Hospital.

Significant rock breaking has been undertaken as part of the in-ground works preparing for the provision of services and ground concrete slab pours has cause a significant amount of noise and vibration around the site.

Basement tunnel excavation works and preparatory works for the link bridges that will connect the current Sunshine Hospital building to JKWCH on level one and two have also been a major focus.

The building site has become a hive of activity with the volume of trucks coming on site and the number of contractors growing. The crew operating the cranes are now on site full time with tower cranes Big Billy and Betty working away. Over 800 cubic meters of concrete have been poured to date. August also saw the first delivery and installation of pre-caste panels.

May 29, 2017 – Virtual fracture care clinic breaking new ground. Western Health has teamed up with the Royal Melbourne Hospital to open Australia’s first virtual fracture clinics.

The Virtual Fracture Care service (V-FRAC), which is being trialled this year and funded by Better Care Victoria, allows adult patients with simple fractures to be managed remotely by physiotherapists and consultants.

And while only in its second month at Western Health, the innovative program is already improving patient access to fracture care and reducing demand on the orthopaedic fracture clinic.

Virtual Fracture Clinic Project lead Narelle Watson and coordinator Becky Pile said V-FRAC had been modelled on a successful UK program. Both Western Health and the Royal Melbourne Hospital began trialling their new clinics this year.

August 9, 2017 – Nursing research alliance proposed to tackle optimising patient care

The importance of health services research is central to the McKeon Review of Health and Medical Research and has been recognised by the MRFF. As nurses provide the majority of a patient’s hospital care, nursing underpins the quality of patient experience and outcomes. Nurses constantly question and seek to improve practices, but a lack of a research culture in the nursing sector, the degree of clinical workload and lack of institutional support for nursing practice research limit the requisite structured investigational studies. The appointment of the VCCC Research & Education Lead in Cancer Nursing, Prof Mei Krishnasamy, seeks to address this deficit in nursing research and enhance collaborative studies through the aegis of the alliance partners. Senior nursing executives across all VCCC partners have confirmed their desire to enhance nurse-led research and a plan to enhance nursing research capability has been prioritised in the VCCC strategic research plan.
